Spectacular medieval fortress Klis | Game of Thrones filming location | Trip to Split, Croatia 2022

The Klis Fortress is only a few kilometres away from the late antique city of Split. Nowadays, the castle is an attractive excursion destination in Dalmatia for both tourists and locals. From the castle you have a phenomenal view of the coast, Split and the surrounding countryside, as well as the islands of Brač, Šolta, Hvar and Vis. The fortress includes observation and defence towers, 6th century gates, a Venetian armoury and much more.
The castle connected the trade route of the Croatian Adriatic coast with Bosnia via Solin. Because of this strategic location, Klis Fortress was nicknamed "The Key of Dalmatia" in Croatia. The famous castle is not only a symbol of the place, but also of the resistance of the united Dalmatia in the fight against the Ottomans. Today Klis represents a link between the sea and the Dalmatian hinterland. Klis Castle has gained great fame, among other things, through the series "Game of Thrones". Some scenes of the series were filmed here and in Dubrovnik. Fans of the series can either explore the filming locations on their own or join an organised "Game of Thrones Tour".
At the foot of the castle, the oldest part of Klis, there is a parish church, a three-nave, century-old basilica of monumental dimensions, richly decorated with frescoes of biblical and historical motifs from the history of Klis. About 10 kilometres from Klis is the Vranjčica cave, where you can explore the subterranean world of Dalmatia.
