The Onyx Kids - Shasha, Shiloh, Shalom, and Sinead - lived in a big, 100-year-old house that that looked like a haunted mansion - creaky floors and all. It was the kind of scary house that made you feel like ghosts might come floating through the halls or that skeletons were waiting to jump out from behind doors and from inside dark closets. It was super creepy, but it was home, and they weren't really (too) scared.

One night Sinead was lying awake listening to the dogs who were whimpering and barking. She tried to go back to sleep but she had a bad feeling in her stomach. Just when she felt she was falling asleep a dark shadow passed over her. This is staring to feeling like a haunted house story right? At first she didn't know what it was, and then, suddenly, she realized - IT WAS A BAT!

She freaked out, rolled off the bed and crawled along the floor and into her sister Shalom's room and started screaming. Shalom woke up, didn't know why Sinead was screaming so, she started screaming too. The bat suddenly flew into the hallway - BAT ATTACK - and so Shalom quickly shut the bedroom door.

Even with all the screaming, their little brother Bad Baby Shiloh didn't wake up. They screamed at him to wake up, and then sister Shasha was there yawning in the doorway, and the all ran up the stairs to the very top of the house where their parents bedroom was - jumped into the bed screaming BAT and terrified.

Mom and Dad went into action. Mom called Animal Control while Dad suited up for war, trying to cover every inch of his body and grabbing a broom to somehow shepherd the bat away and heading back downstairs, into danger.

The kids thought they were safe, until they overheard Animal Control telling their Mom that the bat would make it's way to the highest part of the house. They looked at each other in terror - they were in the highest part of the house!

There was a sudden rustling in the closet, and the bat flew out and into the bedroom. Chaos broke loose as the kids, and Mom, ran back downstairs, passing Dad on the way.

The whole family ended up locking themselves in the basement, staying awake all night, playing games and telling scary stories, horror stories and keeping watch.

Animal Control showed up in the morning and caught the bat in two seconds, but also said there would probably be more. The family laughed it off - no, there couldn't be more. They were terrified of bats before this happened, and now, even more scared than they were.

But, just one week later Sinead was in her room when, in the reflection in the window, there - ANOTHER BAT! The family didn't hesitate - they moved out that night and never went back!
