Summer Time Inventions with J.D. Houvener and Matt Kulseth of Bold Patents

J.D. and Matt kick off our podcast with a discussion of summertime products and innovation. We perform a deep dive into the popular “smokeless fire pit” brand, Solo Stove. It was popularized 5-10 years ago as a camping/portable stove. Solo Stove began selling to the mass market for backyard fire pits but without the smoke. Their technology utilizes an airflow device to suck the smoke out from the bottom of the pit, preventing it from going up the middle. J.D. shows off the design patent that Solo Stove touts on their website and marketing. He notes their circular design for venting at the bottom.

Next, our attorneys take a look at one of Solo Stove’s competitors: Hotshot. Hotshot boasts an almost identical smokeless fire pit, but the shapes of the Hotshot design are diamonds instead of circles (original Solo Stove). J.D. and Matt make the determination that the Hotshot team used a different shape to avoid infringing the design of the Solo Stove. JD went on to say that you don't always need a patent to go to market, but you must be aware of the pre-existing patents and be smart about your design.


Bold Bites Inventor: Bertello Pizza Oven
Our attorneys take a Bold Bite out of a pizza oven pitch on Shark Tank. We critique the inventor’s presentation as well as his pending patent. The inventor was overly focused on the singular design, and J.D. points out that the company is fortunate enough to have their patent still pending, as they need to do more consumer market testing before the first patent is issued. The Bertello Pizza Oven team still has time to develop their portfolio around any other innovations the market demands.
