Wordpress. I've been a huge fan of word press for about 8 to 10 years. It's honestly one of the most powerful platforms for web development in the entire world. I believe the last statistic I read was an upwards of 70% of all websites are powered by WordPress in some way, shape or form. That's totally awesome considering how big the Internet is.

Why is Wordpress so popular? Well as a single developer who's writing a webpage you can develop enterprise-level websites all by your lonesome. I was able to develop a professional e-Commerce website that results in over three quarter million dollars in sales annually simply depending on the plug-ins in themes from third-party developers.

If I were to try to develop that website on my own it would take years to develop. Wordpress allows me to not only develop with it but test variations, experiment, and even deploy new features within hours… Let alone weeks. That kind of dynamic flexibility allows for a lot of experimentation, testing, and refining. It's extremely powerful for an individual developer trying to do the most with what little time he has.

The downside, of course, is that you are completely dependent on these third-party plugin and theme developers. While that may be great in theory because they're doing all the heavy lifting… When it comes to maintaining and updating those plug-ins you are at their mercy and schedule. There is no guarantee that they're going to continue to update it as long as your website is live. The result is a lot of maintenance on your end to make sure that you're maintaining the latest and greatest plug-ins for your application. It's also on your end to make sure that your themes and plug-ins are continually compatible with other themes and plug-ins.

In my opinion that's a small price to pay for the amount you get… But my goal moving forward is to make sure that I am becoming less and less dependent on third-party developers and more dependent on myself. My strategy for that is to start with the least popular plug-ins that are being developed by only one or two people and reduce my dependency on them. I can do this by developing my own variation of their plug-in that is more simplistic and clean and maintain it myself.

Anyway, that's all I have for today! Thanks for all your comments and don't forget to subscribe.
