Looking for a day out full of history, wildlife and charming villages? Save our Cambridgeshire paddling route from Houghton Mill to St Ives 😍

This peaceful return route along the River Great Ouse takes you past a historic 18th-century watermill at Houghton, past wildflower meadows and into the medieval market town of St Ives. You’ll paddle past idyllic villages and spot plenty of wildlife along the way!

☕ More pubs and historical sites along the way at Hemingford Abbots, Hemmingford Grey and St Ives

📍 Launch at National Trust's Houghton Mill in Cambridgeshire. A perfect starting point with parking, refreshments and even camping pods for an overnight stay.

From here, follow the tributary towards the Great River Ouse, passing the Trout Stream weir and keeping to the right to avoid another upcoming weir on the left.

Keep going and you’ll reach the picture-postcard village of Hemingford Grey. Here you’ll pass the impressive riverside church of St James!

In 350m you’ll portage at Hemingford Lock, before continuing to St Ives, where you’ll paddle past Holt Island Nature Reserve, keep a lookout for water voles, dragonflies and grebes!

💡 There are a few portages in St Ives if you fancy a stop at the Norris Museum, or just a riverside drink.

🍰 When ready, turn back around and make your way back to Houghton Mill for a bite to eat in the National Trust cafe and take a tour of the working watermill.
