A judge in Cambodia has convicted Australian filmmaker James Ricketson of spying and sentenced him to six years in prison.
As he was driven away from the court hearing on Friday (31 AUGUST 2018), Ricketson shouted  to reporters: "Who am I spying for?'
Ricketson was detained last year after flying a drone to photograph an opposition party political rally.
The charge of endangering national security is tantamount in legal terms to espionage, but prosecutors never named the foreign power for which he allegedly spied.
Ricketson's son says he and his family are devastated by the verdict.
"We need some time to get out thoughts together and work out what to do next," said Jesse Ricketson, shortly after his father, James Ricketson, was driven out of the court in a prison vehicle to begin his sentence.
"Obviously we won't be giving up," he added "we're just devastated."
Critics say his arrest was part of a wide-ranging crackdown on political opposition by authoritarian Prime Minister Hun Sen in the run-up to national elections which were held in July.
His party won a clean sweep of seats in the poll which was widely criticised outside the country as a sham.
Supporters hope Ricketson may soon gain a pardon, as has happened recently with a number of political opponents.
