There are many strategies that you can use to increase your sales revenue during a downturn in the economy. I would break this into both anticipatory actions and actions in response to an economic downturn.

Anticipatory Actions:

1. Look for diversification opportunities that fit with your business strategy.
2. Keep cash on hand (retained earnings) to buy in tough economic conditions.
3. Look for ways to increase flexibility and be able to pivot quickly when the local economy changes. Hire people that are able to pivot.

Actions in response to economic downturns.

1. Look to your employees and current customers for suggestions. Serve your largest or most important customers.
2. Look for ways to shed interactions with bad clients and customers that consume your time.
3. Support groups that are combating the economic downturn in a revenue generating function.
