An expected 10,000 Protestant Loyalists have begun their contentious parade through Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland's second city, on Saturday (10/8). The Apprentice Boys, a Protestant fraternal order, have been banned from walking along a stretch of the old city walls which overlooks the Catholic area, the Bogside. Barricades of barbed wire were erected and armed troops drafted into the city to help the police keep the peace. The parade is a commemoration of a victory over the Catholic King of England, James II in the seventeenth century.
Bonfires that included burning Irish flags were lit in Protestant
neighbourhoods on the eve of the parade on Friday (9/8) in protest against the re-routing of part of the parade. A Nationalist march to mark the 25th anniversary of the British policy of internment without trial passed peacefully through the city on Friday, after it was decided by the Catholic residents of the Bogside to bypass the Fountain, a Protestant area. It was feared confrontation would be unavoidable if the marchers crossed into Protestant areas. The 3,000 strong crowd heeded the Sinn Fein deputy leader, Martin McGuiness, who pleaded for "calm and dignity."
