How to convert a 67 Ford Mustang Coupe to Fastback with the Golden Star Classic Auto Parts Kit.
For this Episode of MotorTrend’s Week to Wicked Series, the Team started with a 1967 Ford Mustang Hardtop that was in such bad shape that most people would’ve left it to rot in the Texas heat. The dream of putting a Gen 3 Coyote and Chris Alston torque arm suspension kit into this Mustang was looking dim and the cost of buying a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback in decent shape was out of their budget.
Luckily, the group at MotorTrend knew that Golden Star Classic Auto Parts had enough sheet metal and replacement parts for the 1967 Ford Mustang that they could keep the VIN number plus basic structure and convert the project car to a more desirable 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback.
The MotorTrend Team was actually able to use one part number from Golden Star Classic Auto Parts to order every piece of replacement sheet metal for the full fastback conversion. This included the quarter panels, trunk lid, drip rail, rear seat trap door panel, deck filler panel, roof panel, roof braces, bracket kit, door frame, trunk corner and more.

The conversion of the Week to Wicked 1967 Mustang Fastback with Golden Star Classic Auto Parts took place at PG Customs & Bodies in Decatur, Teaxs and took about a week’s time. With an investment of about $5,000 of sheet metal and about $5,000 of labor (back in 2018), the Week to Wicked team had converted their rusted out 1967 Mustang Coupe into a ready to paint 1967 Mustang Fastback.
When it came to choosing a paint color, the Build Team wanted to pay homage to the Gen 3 Mustang Coyote 5.0 engine (the first year of direct injection) that would be updating the engine bay so the MotorTrend Team found an exclusive, one year only color for 2018 Mustangs: Royal Crimson Metallic.
Our friends over at Axalta provided PG Customs & Bodies with the Royal Crimson Metallic paint and we think it turned out beautiful on the Golden Star Classic Auto Parts Sheet Metal.
Once the Mustang body was shipped to the MotorTrend Build Team in Santa Ana, CA, the car was prepped and ready for the 1 week thrash that took place in the MotorTrend Tech Center.
Parts from the following manufacturers helped to complete the build: Chris Alston Total Control Products front and rear suspension system, Currie 9-inch rear end, Wilwood Disc Brakes, Ididit steering column, aluminum G-Force Engineering Driveshaft, Painless Performance harness / wiring kit, Old Air Product a/c system, ProCar by Scat seats, Dakota Digital Gauges and more.
The team at MotorTrend’s Week to Wicked knocked the build out of the park during their 1 week Show that you can watch here on YouTube:

It’s been almost 6 years since the Week to Wicked Team finished the 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback but the legacy of this car continues. In 2024, the team at Fully Torqued and MotorTrend are transforming the car again – this time from a pro-touring autocross ready car into a drag car.
Keep an eye out for the new MotorTrend Show going up on their YouTube Channel in mid-2024 and you can plan to see this Mustang on the 2024 Hot Rod Power Tour as well as at the 2024 SEMA Show.
