The Israeli government is sending mixed signals. Just as negotiations on the release of hostages restarted, Israel has advanced its plans to reoccupy parts of northern Gaza. The government also approved a controversial plan to build new settlements on illegally occupied territory. The proposal came from far-right finance minister Bezilel Smotrich, long known for incendiary remarks against Palestinians. Smotrich openly argues that settlements are the weapon to kill off the idea of a Palestinian state.

The UN is warning that Gaza faces unprecedented destruction, starvation and mass displacement. More than sixty thousand Israeli reservists have already been mobilised, with talk of recruiting Jewish youth from abroad to fill the ranks. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu faces mounting pressure at home and abroad. After rejecting a Hamas-approved ceasefire deal, he doubled down, declaring he was on a spiritual mission to build what he called Greater Israel. It's a controversial biblical concept that envisions Israeli control over Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, Sinai, and beyond. The declaration collides head-on with a renewed international push towards a two-state solution. In just a few weeks, several Western governments are set to formally recognise a Palestinian state.
