Fire's today are field by High Heat Release Rate Fuels. High HRR fuel fires are dependent on one element for growth: Air!

If we give the contents of a modern furnished home air without giving it water the fire will grow exponentially!

For every 18 degrees squared increase in temperature the fire increases 100 % in growth and air entrainment (see Dr. John L. Bryan's work in Fire Extinguishing Systems by NFPA).

Thornton's rule tells us that the amount of heat released during the consumption of a given quantity of oxygen is relatively constant for most combustibles. In other words, each kilogram of oxygen used in the combustion of common organic materials results in release of 13.1 MJ of energy.

For every kilogram of air!

How many Cubic Foot of Air are we allowing in through a 7x3 (21 square feet) open front door?

Notice in this video, through the eyes of a Bullard QXT how the fire grows when the door is open and more importantly how it decays when the door is closed.

Remember, just because we don't see flames doesn't mean there isn't growth or superheated smoke and gases all around us. This is the power of thermal data.
