James D. Walbert (September 28, 1917 – June 7, 2009) was a distinguished American pianist, composer, and teacher, renowned for his contributions to Southern gospel music.
Born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, he was the son of William Burton Walbert and the grandson of James D. Vaughan, often referred to as the "Father of Southern Gospel Music."
Walbert's musical journey began early; he started studying piano at the age of five and, by fourteen, was teaching at the Vaughan Music School. In the 1930s, he became the pianist for the Vaughan Radio Quartet, performing both nationally and internationally.
He pursued formal studies with esteemed instructors, including Lawrence Goodman in Nashville, Moissaye Boguslawski in Chicago, and Vittorio Giannini at the Juilliard School. His versatile performance style seamlessly blended elements of gospel, jazz, classical, and popular music.
Throughout his career, Walbert composed and arranged numerous pieces, enriching the repertoire of gospel and sacred music. He also accompanied prominent entertainers such as Judy Garland, Red Skelton, and Dick Van Dyke. From 1947 until his retirement in 2003, he taught piano in Birmingham, Alabama, mentoring students who would become notable figures in gospel music, including Derrell Stewart of The Florida Boys and Gordon Stoker of The Jordanaires.
Walbert's legacy endures through his compositions, recordings, and the many students he inspired. He was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2004, a testament to his significant impact on the genre.
