We were originally supposed to be going out to Grimsby and Jordan to railfan for the day, but there was a change of plans so we stayed at the station. On this day I experienced my first meet-VIA 97 (Amtrak Mapleleaf), and CN 331. It was also the first time for me that 331 had come first. Usually it follows behind 422. Before 331 came, 421 was heard on the scanner saying that he was on his way, and that he would be through St. Catharines at about noon. We completely forgot about 421, and the scanner died, so bad luck on that part. 422 did not come too long after that. As 422 was passing by, it was evident that it was slowing, and we saw that it had stopped just after the 3rd St. signals. That should have been a clue that 421 was coming. Sure enough it was. We thought nothing of it, perhaps just a red signal or something minor, so we packed up. For the first time in my life I actually fully zipped up my camera bag...talk about bad luck. We began talking and only the rumbling floor gave away 421's presence. I've included the footage of 421 in the video, after a small vote of whether or not to include it. You still see the entire train, just the power (the most important part of the train for railfans) had already passed.
