The Open-Air Museum of Ethnography - Szabadtéri Néprajzi Múzeum Szentendre (commonly known as the Skanzen Szentendre ) is Hungary's largest open-air museum. In its 63-hectare area, the folk architecture, housing culture, farming and lifestyle of the Hungarian-speaking region come to life for visitors. The permanent exhibition of the museum presents the rural heritage of the past divided into landscape units with the help of original and relocated buildings, as well as authentic replicas of buildings - residences, outbuildings, mills, churches. The permanent outdoor exhibition covers the period from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century.

The history of open-air museums began in 1891 with the opening of the first open-air museum. Artur Hazelius (1833-1901) dreamed up the type of museum that presents the rural and urban architecture, housing culture and lifestyle of a region with the help of original, relocated buildings. However, Hazelius realized more than a mere description: an institution presenting both lifestyle and society, in which, in addition to the triple task order of the time (collection, preservation, presentation), teaching and entertainment were also possible. This thought also accompanied the history of the Szentendre museum.
