When I received the first book in the Bula Buddies series, called "The Mysterious Shadow", I knew that my opinion would not be the most important one. The effectiveness of sharing important topics with our children (and future leaders) in this way could only be tested by actual kids! Teaching kids about the threats to our coral reefs in one thing, but finding a way to keep them interested and involved is quite another. And, I completely admit that I was afraid this would be yet another boring book that no child would WANT to read. I've never been so glad to be wrong!

Walt Smith used high quality animated characters, each with their own interesting side stories, to demonstrate how our human acts affect other ecosystems in a way that even children can understand. My daughter's not only loved the book, but are excited for the next edition in the series. They began asking questions about what would cause a "blam" in the ocean, which led to a discussion about bad collection practices.....that they actually understood!

Definitely TWO THUMBS UP for the BULA BUDDIES book series!
