বাংলাদেশে রেলের ইতিহাস অনেক প্রাচীন। সেই ব্রিটিশ আমলে দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চল থেকে বিভিন্ন সম্পদ আহরণের জন্য ব্রিটিশরা বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের বিভিন্ন এলাকায় রেলপথ বসিয়েছিল। এই রেলপথ গুলো সেই সময় দেশের এক প্রান্ত থেকে আর এক প্রান্তে যাবার একমাত্র দ্রুত উপায় ছিল। বস্তুত পুরো ভারত উপমহাদেশকে একসাথে বেধেছিল সেই রেলপথগুলি। সেই সময়ে বর্তমান নীলফামারী জেলার সৈয়দপুরে স্থাপন করা হয় একটি রেল কারখানা, যেটি এখনও চালু আছে। এই রেল কারখানাকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে ওঠে সৈয়দপুর শহর যেটার অর্থনৈতিক গুরুত্ব সময়ের সাথে সাথে বেড়েই চলেছে।
