Near the delta of the Kenai River, the town of Kenai is nestled into the alder thickets and tidal marshes so iconic of the area. There are patches of white and black spruce trees sprinkled into the muskeg and bogs with pockets of birch trees, which display their golden splendor each fall. To call this place a scenic location doesn’t do it justice.
Moose dash among thickets of lowbush cranberries and lingonberry bushes. Predators here include wolves, lynx, occasional wolverines, and plenty of black bears, as well as ill-tempered brown bears.
Around 6 AM on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025, 36-year-old Ariean Fabrizio Colton was getting ready to head out on her daily morning jog. The married mother of three children lives in their family home located on Chinook Drive near the Pillars boat launch. Their neighborhood offered spacious and peaceful views of the Kenai River Valley as well as the Turnagain Arm. Each day, she had enjoyed the seasonal changes in the plant life and been rejuvenated by the cool, fresh air that rolled in from the ocean down the Turnagain Arm. As soon as she finished tying her jogging shoes, she energetically bounded down the stairs and into the twilight morning mist. No source indicates that she carried a firearm or bear spray, as running into a bear in town is not very likely.
There had been a recent spate of bear attacks in Alaska, though, and it isn’t clear if Ariean was aware of them. Right outside of Anchorage, along the Basher Trail, a woman had been mauled by a brown bear about a month prior. She survived but suffered serious injuries. Then, along the South Fork of the Eagle River, the same week, a hiker was mauled by a brown bear and suffered serious injuries as well. The brown bears in Alaska are active this summer as the Kenai River reports a record high run of Sockeye Salmon.
Ariean trotted a short warm-up before hitting the road that connects her property with the neighborhood. She had just settled into a comfortable pace as she passed the tapering line of alders on her neighbor's property. She had jogged past this point a thousand times, but this time would change her life.
Suddenly, a deep huffing sound came from the alder edge and grew louder as the angry brown bear approached. Ariean turned her head and saw the bear bounding toward her in leaps that covered 15 feet and propelled the bear at six times her speed.
Now, a brown bear weighing 600 pounds running at about 30 miles per hour impacts a human victim with the same energy as a small car travelling at 15 miles per hour. That may not sound like a big deal, but it is enough to break ribs, separate joints, and knock the sense out of any human being.
If impacting Ariean was the only thing the bear did to her, it would be bad enough, but the attack didn’t stop there. As she was pinned beneath the bear, the massive predator viciously inflicted severe injuries to her face, scalp, and head.
Back at Ariean’s neighbor's house, her neighbor, whom we will call James, was awakened by the huffing sounds of a bear. It wasn’t uncommon to hear bears do this, especially if they were confronted by a dog or another bear. James thought it was likely that the bear was working over one of the neighbor dogs and listened as the sound faded after a few minutes.
After tearing into Ariean’s flesh, the bear began to drag her from the roadside, back toward James’ house. It dragged her for a distance of just over 100 yards and alternated between dragging Ariean and resting.
James didn’t report hearing any screaming but continued to hear the huffing for around an hour. Waiting until daylight, James ventured outside to see what the bear had been attacking. In a patch of trees on his property he found Ariean.
James examined the severe injuries to her face and scalp. Realizing her injuries required immediate help, he rushed to contact first responders.
Responders from Kenai Police, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game converged on the area, secured the scene, and requested a helicopter for an immediate medevac. Troopers later said the bear had not been found despite a search on foot and with a drone but did find brown bear tracks confirming the bear's species.
Doctors in Anchorage stabilized Ariean and began the first of what her family says will be extensive surgeries. Family members describe her condition as serious and the road to recovery as long, which aligns with the kind of complex trauma common in maulings that involve the face, scalp, neck, and arms.
