Casting a plaster sculpture: from mold to finish | FEN DE VILLIERS ATELIER

A clay maquette doesn't last, yet I'm not prepared to lose it. The maquette holds the raw energy of creation inside it: hours of contemplation, playing with form, balancing shapes and perfecting details, all consolidated in a small model.

As the original clay won't stand the test of time, I like to eternalise my maquettes in limited edition plaster series.

This video shows the entire process of casting a plaster version of 'Breakthrough':
- assembling the mold
- preparing the plaster
- casting the plaster
- birthing the piece of sculpture
- cleaning up the forms
- patinating with the stone dust from the monument
- signing the piece of sculpture
