In this video, our cameras go inside a juvenile prison in the Pacific Northwest to see how the state and this facility have completely reassessed how juveniles are treated once inside lockup. The prison has ended long periods of isolation for kids at the facility, focusing instead on de-escalating situations verbally to help kids think through their actions. The prison has also implemented a new unit called The U, which focuses on a more therapeutic setting versus typical cells. Both changes have led to a more safe and secure environment for teens and staff, and the prison is now being used as a model for other juvenile facilities around the country.
