Scaly face mites are burrowing mites that affect budgerigars and other birds. They cause a thick, crusty residue on the face, beak, and legs.
Symptoms
Thickening crust around the cere and beak
White crusts around the eyes, nostrils, and corners of the beak
Loss of feathers in the affected area
Deformities of the beak and legs
Swiping of the bill
Refusal to eat
Treatment
Consult a vet immediately
Treat all birds in the aviary
Use a treatment like Avimec, which is effective against scaly face mites
Complications
If left untreated, the mites can cause severe deformities of the beak
The bird can succumb to secondary infections which could prove fatal
The bird can starve to death if the beak is deformed
Prevention
Maintain a healthy cere, which is the tissue above the beak
A healthy cere is smooth and hard, the nostrils are open, and there are no signs of any abnormalities
