Rare footage of the exhumation of Tsar Alexander III

November 2015. The year of the 100th anniversary of the murders of Tsar Nicholas II and his family is fast approaching. In 2015, the Russian Orthodox Church is still in denial about the remains discovered in Ekaterinburg, the identity of which had been confirmed by various scientific methods. They decide to do additional tests to establish the authenticity of these controversial remains, which were at the time interred in a tomb at the Cathedral in Petropavlovsky Fortress for roughly two decades.

For this purpose, the DNA of Nicholas II's father, Alexander III, was to be used, to check not only the paternity between the latter and the remains established to be Nicholas II, but also the relationship to the remains of Alexander's three granddaughters.

Once again, the remains of the members of last Russian imperial family were exhumed, so was the body of Alexander III. The exhumation was carefully filmed and documented, to ensure it was all done properly.

After tissue samples were taken, the father was reinterred in the tomb where he had laid for over a century, but the fate of the son's remains, as well as his family's, was not so simple. They were not reinterred into their Petropavlovsky tomb, but taken to an undisclosed location by ROC representatives. Most likely they are now kept at the monastery near Moscow where the remains of their previously missing son and daughter are currently held. Once again the entire family was denied burial...

To date, ROC has not officially accepted that the Ekaterinburg remains are those of Nicholas, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei. This will probably not happen in our lifetimes, but we can hope that at least they are physically next to each other now, as they would have probably wished, and at peace.
