While the answer depends somewhat on personal style, I typically recommend that you open with an illustration to capture their attention. I also encourage you to use one strong illustration for every major point of your sermon.

Is it possible to preach a sermon or present a lecture without an illustration? Probably, but I contend that is asking the wrong question. Instead ask, “Do I want my congregation to understand my sermon and grasp its main points?”
