Children's Minister Karen Chhour says while New Zealand has tried military-style academies in the past, it needs to better support young people as they return to the community.

The Minister is expected to release more details about the academies and efforts to address youth offending soon.

Chhour also outlined why the Government wants to repeal Section 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki Act, which was introduced to address the over-representation of Māori children in state care, despite advice to the contrary.
