Shin Daewae is a multiple award-winning woman filmmaker and is often dubbed “the queen of Myanmar documentary film.” On October 15, 2023, she was arrested in Yangon while retrieving a video drone. On January 10, 2024, the military court sentenced her to life in prison. International journalist organisations, the film community and human rights organisations have been tirelessly campaigning for her release.
To commemorate Myanmar Martyr’s Day, the FCCT will present Shin Daewe’s most notable films, followed by a panel discussion on the significance of her work, the state of documentary films and women filmmakers in Myanmar, as well as the plight of female political prisoners in the country.
Films to be screened:
Take Me Home (2013)
Now I’m 13 (2015)
