Even a collector with more than one hundred US silver dollars to their name can be tricked by a fake common date "silver" dollar.

Especially when I simply glace at it in a coin shop and say, "I will take that Morgan dollar please". Into the paper shopping bag it went, and it was only when I got it home did this dodgy dollar start showing its true self. This coin was a trick. A con. A fraud. Designed to trick people. Unfortunately, such coins are common. Common date (like 1882, 83, 87,) Morgan dollars are regularly faked. They sale for between £20 and £30 on the UK market, so they are targeted by fraudsters.

BUYERS BEWARE

If you are collecting US silver dollars, it's so important to TEST ALL YOUR COINS.

Testing high silver content coins doesn't need expensive equipment or chemicals.

I show an incredibly easy test in my video, the "drop test". High silver content coins make a distinctive ringing sound when you drop them onto a hard surface. Bank counters used to be polished marble or granite for a good reason: dropping coins on them tested them.

Weight test: A Morgan dollar should weigh 26.73 grams, this exact weight was a major original 19th century security feature of the coin. Expect worn coins to weigh slightly less.
Get some scales ⚖️

Clarity test: The features of the coin should be razor sharp, especially the stars and letters. This applies even if the coin has been spent and used by a lot of people and is quite worn.

Magnet 🧲 test: Obtain a powerful smooth sided button magnet and hold your dollar coin at a 45 or 50 degree angle. Allow the smooth button magnet to slide down it: it should slide fairly slowly. This means your coin is 90% silver and the real deal. If it sticks, then it's a steel fake. If the magnet shots down the coin, then it's a base metal fake.

My fake silver dollar was hauled back to the shop where it came from, and it was declared to be fake by the coin dealer, and I was refunded my money and given a free 1900 silver Half Crown!
