Paint like a Pro - How to prep a wall for painting

In this episode of Paint like a Pro, Resene paint expert Murdo Shaw demonstrates how to prep a wall for painting.

“Prepping is a present for your future self,” he says. “If done well, you will always end up with the best possible result”.

Murdo shares a few tricks of the trade to have you painting like a pro! He tells you the best tools to use, as well as, step-by-step techniques.

You will need:
• Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner
• Sponge
• Bucket
• Lint-free cloth
• Drop cloth
• Sandpaper discs
• Sanding head and pole
• Resene EzyFill Quick
• PAL putty knife
• Pencil
• Dusting brush or broom
• Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat
• Paint can opener
• Paint pots
• Paintbrushes
• Resene paint stirrer
• Resene paint of your choice

Step-by-step instructions:
1. Wash your wall with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. This is a brilliant product, as you don’t need to rinse it off. Once clean, wipe the wall down with a dry, lint-free cloth.

2. Once your wall is completely dry, fill any holes with Resene EzyFill Quick. If you’ve removed hooks, the holes they leave may require the pencil trick. Lightly push a pencil into the hole, until the rough outer edges flatten and sink into the wall. Don’t worry if the holes appear larger once you’ve pushed the pencil through the wall, as this now ensures that you have a smooth surface to fill with Resene EzyFill Quick.

3. Sand your wall, and do yourself a favour by using a sanding head on a pole. Dust down the wall afterwards with either a dust brush or a broom.

4. Lastly, use Resene Quick Dry to spot prime over the areas you’ve filled with Resene EzyFill Quick. When applying the primer undercoat, use light brushstrokes in a star-shaped cross-hatch motion – this will ensure that no harsh lines will appear when you apply your top coat.

5. Well done, your prep is now complete! Now you’re ready to apply two coats of your chosen Resene paint.
