We've Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”.

Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”.

Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbit hole that there’s no turning back and you just have to see things through to some sort of logical conclusion.

This is the place we found ourselves in after what should have been the simple removal of bulwark-mounted Genoa tracks, led to the mammoth repair of 30 metres or 100ft of damaged hull-to-deck join ,around the entire perimeter of our 45-year-old Kelly Peterson 44, Brilliant II.

Having gone to all that effort, we couldn’t just throw a damaged teak toe-rail back onto an equally damaged bulwark and scupper area.

So, we took the Queen of pop’s advice, and we made a burger – well actually, we repaired the entire bulwark and scupper section of the boat and we repainted it, with first high-build, then primer and finally about three coats of the excellent International brand ‘Perfection’ top coat. But before we got to this point, we had to remove and fill in superfluous deck fittings, as well as lifting, inspecting, repairing and re-bedding all the numerous fixtures we did need to keep – like a boat-load of stanchions and essential rigging attachment points – sometimes finding corrosive surprises along the way.
