Our forests are filled with mushrooms and other macrofungi, but one group doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The polypores! They are responsible for the necessary decay of dead wood in all forest types. Some are large while others are practically microscopic. We will look at this broad group and learn the ecological role they play and learn to identify a handful of species. Polypores can be the cure to the mushroom hunter’s winter blues as many species can be found year round.

Tavis is a 35-year veteran of mushroom cultivation and identification in northwest Wisconsin. He is a mycology instructor for 22 schools in the Upper Midwest and has been teaching for about twelve years. Tavis is the author of “Mushroom Cultivation” (Quarto) and co-author of “The Beginner’s Guide to Mushrooms” (Quarto). He specializes in the genus Russula and several other groups. He is also the founder of the NoWME Club and an active contributor to everything mushroom in the Midwest.
