From backing singer (for Selena and Meghan Trainor!) to solo star, thanks to her pitch-perfect R&B tones, and her DIY graft, Alex Isley’s star is ascending. The daughter of Ernie Isley (of The Isley brothers fame), the 38-year-old was raised in a musical household, trained by her Grandma who was an opera singer, and of course influenced by her superstar dad.

But as much as there have been brushes with icons — Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder — Isley’s a grounded soulstress, a self-taught producer who went to UCLA where she became buds with Moses Sumney, added her vocals to a Kendrick cut, and earned herself a two Grammy nomination working with acclaimed jazz-master Robert Glasper. We talk about all this, plus her current EP, WHEN, her experiences as a backing singer, making out in cars, being a mom, self-care, her forthcoming album, and so much more.
