Car theft in England and Wales has reached a 16-year high, with 132,489 vehicles stolen last year. The surge in theft is largely attributed to keyless car theft, where criminals exploit the keyless entry systems of vehicles to gain access without the owner's knowledge. Organised crime groups are increasingly involved in car theft, with executive vehicles being targeted due to their high value. The stolen cars are often used in crimes, stripped for parts, sent abroad, or given new identities and sold. The most stolen cars are typically popular models, such as the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, and Volkswagen Golf. The Midlands and Essex are the worst areas for car crime in terms of thefts per 1,000 people. Police resources and technology have struggled to keep up with the evolving tactics of car thieves, leading to low detection rates and challenges in recovering stolen vehicles. Car owners are advised to take precautions such as using Faraday bags or boxes to prevent relay theft, turning off remote keyless entry functions, and installing physical barriers and tracking devices. Car manufacturers are working to improve security measures, but criminals continue to find ways to bypass them.
