Tesla Coil Demonstration @ Niagara Parks Power Station | Game of Thrones intro / Owl City Fireflies

Tesla coil demonstration from the Niagara Parks Power Station on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. This demonstration is done hourly throughout the day and has a variety of songs programmed in. During this demonstration they played the Game of Thrones Main Title Theme and Owl City Fireflies.

The Niagara Parks Power Station (formerly Rankine Generating Station) was built in 1905 and contained 5 vertical shaft hydroelectric generators. The turbines were 130 feet below the surface and connected to the generators in the hall by huge steel shafts. By 1924 that count was increased to 11 which was the peak capacity the site would achieve. By 2003 the station was not operating consistently, only producing power when demand was high. The station ceased operation in 2005 and was officially decommissioned in 2006. Reasons for closure were the 25hz generators (instead of the 60hz standard we operate on today) along with the turbine/generators shifting out of alignment due to movement of the rock between the two locations.

The site was transferred to the Niagara Parks district in 2009 and sat vacant for about a decade. In October 2019 Niagara Parks announced a plan to reopen the station as a tourist site. The Niagara Parks Power Station opened on July 1st, 2021 to visitors and includes not only the generating hall but the discharge tunnel has been converted to a falls observation platform which gives a spectacular view of both Horseshoe and American Falls.
