IPSWICH | Tour of Ipswich Town Centre and Waterfront
Today we're in Suffolk for a walking tour of the fantastic historic town of Ipswich to have a look at the shops, businesses, tourist attractions, pubs, restaurants and more. Come with me as we explore Ipswich Town Centre and the beautiful waterfront area.

From a visitor's perspective, Ipswich town centre offers a delightful mix of modern retail and historic charm. The main shopping area is largely pedestrianised, making it a pleasant and easy place to explore on foot. You'll find a blend of well-known high street names like Marks & Spencer and Primark, as well as two main covered shopping centres: Sailmakers and the Buttermarket Centre. The latter has been updated to include a cinema and a range of dining options. For a more unique shopping experience, it's worth venturing off the main thoroughfares into areas like 'The Saints' (St Nicholas' Street and St Peter's Street) where you can discover a fantastic collection of independent boutiques, cafes, and specialist shops housed in beautiful old buildings. The town also has a traditional market on the Cornhill on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, adding to the local atmosphere.

Beyond the shops, Ipswich has a surprising number of tourist attractions right in the heart of the town. A highlight is Christchurch Mansion, a stunning Tudor house in Christchurch Park that now serves as an art gallery and museum. It houses an impressive collection of artworks by famous Suffolk-born artists like Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable. The park itself is a great spot for a relaxing stroll. Another must-see is the Ipswich Waterfront, a vibrant and modern area that was once an industrial dockyard. It's now a hub of activity with cafes, bars, and restaurants, offering a great place to sit and watch the yachts. You can even take a boat trip down the River Orwell from here to see the famous Orwell Bridge.

The town centre is steeped in history, and you can spot this in its famous places and architecture. One of the most intriguing buildings is the Ancient House, a stunning Grade I listed building with ornate wood carvings that is now a Lakeland shop. This is a great example of how the town blends its rich past with its modern function. The town's historical roots are also evident in its medieval churches and landmarks like Wolsey's Gate. For culture vultures, Ipswich boasts a lively theatre scene with venues like the New Wolsey Theatre and the Ipswich Regent, which host a variety of performances from drama to live music. The town is also home to a number of museums, including the Ipswich Museum and the Ipswich Transport Museum, for those interested in local history.
