About Raph

I had wanted to work with Raphaëlle for a little while now. We had spoken about doing a photo shoot and she was very interested but the actual time to do it never came up. I was a tiny bit fed up of doing photo shoots inside so I proposed to her to take photos outside. Not knowing what I was about to get into, as always, I jumped into an outdoor natural light photo project. We chose a day that we knew would be a bit overcast and we went out and started taking photos. Although I know quite a bit about shooting in natural light, the reality of doing this in a winter environment was not all easy. I encountered many caveats when arriving home to actually evaluating what I had shot. Based on those photos and the shooting experience, I came up with some great tips on how one should attack an outdoor winter photo shoot.

Easy tips to remember
Shooting tips

It is cold so keep three things warm. Your camera equipment, your hands, and your model.

Keep your mode of transport a nearby as possible

Plan a small mini bag for the trip out to where you are actually going to shoot

There are limits to how cold you can accept for an actual portrait or photo shoot -20C or -4F is the cutoff point. So many factors enter into play in destroying your shoot at this point.

Photo tips

Winter is all about snow. Bear this in mind. There is a great deal of it everywhere. This creates scenes where color dynamics are not really there. Bear in mind that it give a great look but do not expect fantastically colorful backgrounds

Low dynamics shots shots can play to your advantage however due to the fact that it allows you to focus in on your subject and also gives you some extreme contrast.

There is nothing that compares to an overcast winter sky. It is not the same as an overcast summer sky in the slightest. It really is what all studio soft boxes strive to attain. Softness on the model cannot be recreated in a studio
