1. Yes, they really work, but it's quite cumbersome to used them
2. They are usually made from brass zinc alloy, which is quite hard and could scratch door handles, elevator buttons and touch-screens of you mobile phone, ATM or at the gas station
3. To operate a touch screen it needs quit a lot of surface contact, hence is not really recommended, but can be used if really needed
