Rohtang Pass is one of those places whose name we hear more in stories than in reality. Sometimes because of snowfall, sometimes landslides, sometimes road closures, and in December, Rohtang usually remains closed for tourists. Many people believe that Rohtang is extremely risky and dangerous, especially during winter.
In this video, we take you on a real journey from Manali to Rohtang Pass in December, when snowfall was surprisingly low and the pass was open. We honestly show how Rohtang looks during this time, what the road conditions are like, and whether it is really as dangerous as people say.
We started our journey early in the morning to avoid traffic, as Rohtang routes are unpredictable and even a small delay can turn into hours of traffic jam. The distance from Manali to Rohtang Pass is around 51 kilometers, but in December the travel time depends completely on road conditions and vehicle availability, since only 4x4 vehicles are allowed.
A day before the trip, we visited Mall Road to arrange a taxi. Initially, taxi operators quoted a very high price, and after speaking to multiple drivers, we realized that taxi unions operate with fixed rates during peak demand. After rejecting a few options and negotiating, we finally settled at a lower price. This video shows the actual ground reality so that you know what to expect while planning your own trip.
We also rented snow gear on the way, including snow suits, gloves, and snow socks, which are essential to protect yourself from the cold and wind at higher altitudes.
During the journey, the road conditions changed frequently, with some rough patches affected by monsoon damage from the Beas river. As we gained altitude, the temperature dropped, and the views kept getting better with every turn.
Our first major stop was Gulaba check post, where we reached early and had to wait as entry opens later in the morning. After that, we stopped at Marhi for breakfast, where the cold was intense and the surroundings were completely covered in snow, far away from city noise and crowds.
As we moved closer to Rohtang, the landscapes became more dramatic. We witnessed frozen waterfalls where flowing water had turned into ice due to extreme cold. Finally, we reached Rohtang Pass at around 13,000 feet, the meeting point of Kullu Valley and Lahaul-Spiti.
At Rohtang, we also experienced an ATV ride at high altitude and shared how oxygen levels and fatigue feel at this height. This video captures not just the destination, but the entire journey, challenges, costs, and real experiences that travelers face.
If you are planning a Rohtang Pass trip in winter or want to know the real situation before visiting, this video will help you plan better and avoid surprises.
