Low status behaviors often stem from uncertainty or a desire to please others. For example, saying things like “I like that, I totally agree with you, we should do it that way” can unintentionally communicate a lack of confidence or independent thought. While agreeing with others is sometimes necessary, overdoing it may diminish your perceived authority. Similarly, apologetic language such as “Oh sorry, what I meant was…” can signal hesitance. It’s important to identify and reduce these tendencies to ensure your professional presence reflects confidence and clarity.
On the other hand, high-status behaviors project authority and command respect. For instance, instead of overly agreeing, you might say, “I have a little bit of a different perspective on that,” showing that you value your own insights while remaining collaborative. Reframing your language to sound decisive is another high-status behavior. Statements like “Actually, no, that’s not quite right. The last time we did this with a tech client, it was really well received,” communicate both confidence and expertise, which are critical for leadership success.
Another hallmark of high-status behavior is setting a clear agenda in professional meetings. Rather than starting a meeting passively, begin with purpose and structure. For example, saying, “Once again, thank you so much for meeting today. Great, so I’d like to discuss three key areas today: our project timeline, resource allocation, and next steps,” demonstrate leadership, organization, and a focus on outcomes. This type of communication helps others see you as a capable leader who values their time and input.
Mastering high-status behaviors is an essential step in developing strong leadership skills and building influence at work. By replacing low-status tendencies with confident, decisive communication and behavior, you can elevate your professional presence and become a more effective leader. These small but powerful changes can have a lasting impact on your career and how you are perceived by colleagues and stakeholders.
