Virgil and Deanna launch from an overnight stop in Champaign, Illinois for the final leg into Oshkosh (KOSH). Instead of scud running in marginal VFR, Virgil files IFR using the preferred routing published in the Oshkosh Notice, earning a quick “cleared as filed” and getting them moving toward the world’s busiest airport.

As heard on the radios, airplanes of every type are converging on Oshkosh: Beech Barons, a Grumman Tiger, Comanches, and more all stacking up for arrival. Entering real instrument conditions around 5,000 feet, the crew flies the RNAV 36 approach while VFR traffic flows beneath them — creating nonstop task management, spacing adjustments, and speed control.

A fast Lancair IV behind the Comanche has to break off due to the arrival compression. To help keep the sequence moving, Virgil lands long, just missing the yellow dot, and taxis into Comanche Town in the Vintage Aircraft parking area.
