Описание к видео 🚆 Long distance cargo cab ride on a fuel train (Cab Ride Switzerland | Olten - St. Margrethen)

We‘re sitting in one of total two locomotives in front of a fuel train filled with Diesel and we‘re ready to depart. The train started out in Cossonay in the french part of Switzerland, was handed over to us in Olten Hammer and we‘re taking it to St. Margrethen, all the way in the northeast of Switzerland, very close to the Austrian and German Border at Lake Constance.

A steep grade of 2% awaits us between St. Gallen and St. Margrethen and due to the weight of the train, it can‘t simply be held on speed with the dynamic brakes. Therefore, the trains speed is controlled with the „sawtooth“ braking method: Applying the brakes more than necessary, slowing the train down significantly and then releasing the brakes entirely, so the train slowly gains speed again, the brakes may cool down and recover, then the process is repeated. This is a very common method for heavy trains on steeper grades. The train consists of 20 fuel tank wagons, 10 of them are delivered to St. Margrethen, the other 10 are pulled up the hill again and reach their destination in St. Gallen Winkeln.

Since there was a lot of communication during the shunting sequence at the end of the video, I have muted it and replaced it with music instead. Music credits at the end of this description.
