KATRINA PHAM: Wait, do you know what it actually means to charge someone?

CHRIS VAZQUEZ: Walk me through it.

KATRINA: It’s when a prosecutor formally accuses a person of committing a crime.

CHRIS: Does that mean the person is guilty?

KATRINA: Nope. And charges can range from minor things like traffic violations to more serious things like felonies. The severity of a crime will usually determine how a person will get charged. A person can be charged with a felony if a grand jury votes to indict them. But when a prosecutor directly files charges with the court, that’s usually for misdemeanors. And when a police officer writes a citation, that’s probably for a smaller, less serious crime. But it can look a little different depending on what state you’re in, and if you're being charged with a state or federal crime. Any other questions?
