New Delhi railway station is the largest and second busiest station in India and handles approximately 5 lakh passengers daily (approximately 170 -190 million passengers annually) will be redeveloped by Rail Land Development Authority(RLDA) which has invited bids from private players.
The station handles around 400 trains per day which are expected to further increase due to higher operational efficiencies resulting from the redevelopment and better yard utilization.New Delhi railway station (station code: NDLS), situated between Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj is the main railway station in Delhi. It is the busiest railway station in the country in terms of train frequency and passenger movement. Around 400 trains start, end, or pass through the station daily, which handled 500,000 passengers daily in 2013 with 16 platforms. The New Delhi railway station holds the record for the largest route interlocking system in the world along with the Kanpur Central Railway Station i.e. 48. The station is about two kilometres north of Connaught Place, in central Delhi. Most eastbound and southbound trains originate at New Delhi Railway Station; however, some important trains to other parts of the country also touch/originate at this station . Most pairs of Shatabdi Express originate and terminate at this station. It is also the main hub for the Rajdhani Express. New Delhi railway station is the highest earning railway station in Indian Railways based on passenger revenue followed by Howrah Junction. The Indian Railways has rejigged the redevelopment plan of New Delhi station by withholding the commercial development part from the core station development. The commercial development involving real estate would be taken up in the second phase while the station infrastructure including upgradation of passenger amenities, parking lots and core areas of the station building would be undertaken in the first phase.
According to the plan, a double dome architecture structure of 450 meter long and 80 meter height would come up over the station. The total cost is estimated around Rs 4470 crore. There would be 25 floors high twin domes, which would be known as Infinity Towers, would cover all the 16 platforms of the station.
