First Ride On Vittoria Zaffiro Tires and TPU Innertubes | Trek Domane AL3

I bought my 2022 Trek Domane AL 3 in April of 2022. Recently I installed a Selle San Marco Aspide carbon fiber saddle I bought a few years ago. Following up on that I installed a wider ratio 11-34 tooth Shimano CS HG400 cassette, which gave me a 1 to 1 low gear ratio for climbing.

Now I have upgraded the tires and inner tubes. I replaced the stock Bontrager R1 Hardcase “gravel-lite” tires (428g each) with Vittoria Zaffiro road tires (470g each), 700c x 32mm in both cases. I also installed a pair of CyclAmi thermoplastic urethane (TPU) inner tubes. The stock butyl inner tubes weighed 167g each, compared to 34g each for the TPU units. The stock tires and tubes weighed 1190g and the new setup weighs 1008g, for a savings of 182g per wheel or 364g total. The entire bike now weighs 10.7 kilos with its 63g heavier cassette, pedals and a bottle cage.

The day I installed the new tubes and tires, it rained. Then for various reasons, I didn't get to ride the bike for nearly a week. But when I did, the improvement was dramatic. The new setup has a very noticeable much lower rolling resistance. I don't have hard numbers to share but the bike feels much quick. Thus far, I'm totally pleased with these upgrades!
