In our animistic belief system we do not see a spirit as a ghost-like entity or a spectrum of remaining consciousness (although such cases exist in other different circumstances). Instead, each entity has different and multiple bodies, and the "physical" body is a denser form, whilst other bodies have their own density. A "spirit" can vary in its form and density.

When the world was finally made, many of the spirits that awaited outside the arch of the sky vault, came forth and took different shapes, assuming different bodies according to their needs, wishes and their own individual and collective personalities.

Today we remember them as "ancestors". Some never took a human form. Others were human for a time, and many more took different animal shapes and also dwell on the land in the forms of stones and trees, and within fire and as forces of nature.

We honour them by making little dolls out of nature's elements, and keep them on our windows and at our tables. They are remembered, taken care of, and given shelter. They protect us and help to make life a little bit more bearable, and this world is more habitable, for as long as we treat them with respect, as part of their spirits is invited to live in these dolls, and so we create beneficial relationships of mutual respect.
