When editing audio for your YouTube channel, imovie can be intimidating. Audio is a key factor in how your YouTube video will be perceived. Here are some quick tips and hints on editing your audio in imovie to make your content sound more professional.

Separating audio from video clips on imovie
Click on the video clip and select “modify” on the top of the screen to the left, then click “detach audio”
The audio file from the video will appear below the video clip separated from the clip, at this point you can move the audio file around and add it to different clips. Any editing you do to it at this point won't alter the video it was once a part of.

Now that you have audio separate from video, or you are starting with separated audio, here are a few tips for better quality audio in imovie and editing audio in imovie.
You will want to utilize the editing tools menu in the top right hand side of your screen making sure that the audio clip you are editing is selected, you can view the various options imovie has to edit audio clips.
There are three menu options for editing audio clips in imovie, the icon with the bar graph allows for background noise reduction and equalizing, you have pre-set options for increasing bass and treble etc.

The icon that looks like a speedometer allows for adjusting the speed of the clip, you can also reverse the audio

The third Icon that has the bubbles has some audio editing tools in it as well, from there you can alter the audio sound making the pitch really high or low, also add some weird effects like making the voice sound robotic.

Here are some quick tips for editing the audio clips,
How to Fade in/ fade out clips
On the clip you will see a small bubble on each end, if you use your cursor to grab the bubble and drag it, you will adjust how the clip ends.

Lowering the noise level of background music
If you are going to have background music in your video, you can click on your audio clip and use the option on the icon in the top right hand side of your screen that looks like a speaker to automatically reduce the volume level of other clips in your video. Now if you plan on having other noise effects in your video, this may not be the best option to do since it will automatically lower the volume of those clips as well. If you plan on having multiple audio clips in your video, you can manually adjust the volume levels of specific audio clips instead.

How to adjust the audio level of specific clips in imovie
All you need to do is click on the line that runs through the middle of the clip whose level you want to adjust and drag the bar up or down to adjust the volume.

A lot of times when filming there are multiple takes, some audio captured may be better takes than the other three hundred captured, so knowing how to split clips and trim audio is a must for better editing. Now the biggest thing you want to make sure of is that the actual audio clip you want to edit is highlighted before doing anything. Especially if you plan on using command keys to do your editing. Don’t worry though, you can always hit command key + Z to take back anything you just did. To split a clip you want to make sure the tracker is moved over the part you want to cut, then the easiest way is to hit command + B or you can click modify at the top of your screen and select split clip.
