Understanding, Evaluating, and Treating Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder

Learn about Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)—a diagnosis of childhood appearing for the first time under the category of depressive disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in 2013. Although DMDD was included in the DSM-5 to address concerns about the misdiagnosis and consequence of over-treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, its addition to the DSM-5 without published validity studies has led to questions about its status as a distinct disorder. In this webinar, Sam Goldstein, PhD, will discuss the creation of the DMDD diagnosis, symptoms of this disorder, and guidelines and challenges for multi-disciplinary assessment when DMDD is suspected. As a new diagnosis, there remains much to learn about DMDD in children, who are at greater risk than others to experience a myriad of adult psychiatric disorders and may in fact suffer from more adult psychiatric disorders than other childhood conditions.
