You can and will be able to get loans again after bankruptcy, sometimes more easily than before.
It might surprise you, but roughly six months after you file for bankruptcy when the final discharge on your debt is done, you will start getting offers for credit cards or new cars. You might wonder why these crazy lenders would trust you after you just went through bankruptcy. But there are two eminently practical reasons for this.
First, you just got rid of a bunch of debt. That frees up your future income to pay new debts. Creditors know then that if you incur new debt, your future income is available now without competing with other creditors. Assuming you have future income.
Second, section 727(a)(8) of the bankruptcy code says that after getting your debts discharged in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you cannot do another one for eight years and a day from the time of filing. Creditors are very much aware of this. They know that if you incur new debt, you'll have to pay it for at least the next 8 years.
As a result, you'll be able to get credit cards and even buy a home or car. It is true, however, that the terms will not be as favorable as you might have hoped for. At first, the interest rates might be a little high, and the credit card available balances might be a little low, but those are all temporary problems. A skilled bankruptcy attorney may even be able to help you bring down the interest rate faster and increase those available balances so that, soon enough, your loan options will be just as favorable.
However, if you were still struggling under a mountain of debt without getting any discharge, new loans would be even harder to obtain.
