A Dive That Changed Everything | Cave Diving Gone Wrong

In 1985, a group of divers set out to explore the mysterious depths of Cape Kīnaʻu Cave, off the coast of Maui. Armed with excitement and curiosity, they descended into the dark, twisting passages beneath the ocean. But as they ventured deeper, the cave’s beauty turned into a trap. Visibility disappeared, air supplies dwindled, and panic set in. What happened next would change the course of their dive forever. How did they manage to survive the chaos?

Cape Kīnaʻu Cave is located within the fascinating ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve, a protected region established in 1973 on the southwest coast of Maui, Hawaii. The reserve covers 1,238 acres of land and 807 acres of ocean, stretching along 3 miles of Maui's rugged coastline. Known for its unique natural environment, the reserve includes a striking lava field created by the most recent volcanic activity on the island. The rocky, rough terrain is mainly composed of pahoehoe lava, which originated from the Haleakalā volcano’s southwest rift zone.
