Описание к видео What is a 'simulant'? Definition simulants / imitations

Welcome to Gem Dictionary by The Gem Academy where we expain terminology used for gemstones. Read more about ‘simulants’ here…

Simulants (a.k.a ‘imitations’) are gem materials that can be used to imitate the appearance of another – usually as a cheaper alternative, whilst getting a similar ‘look’.

I discuss diamond and its many simulants in this video. This is a great example as diamonds are expensive and alternative materials are commonly used in costume jewellery and accessories to get the ‘bling’ of diamond without the cost! I have shoes, bags and many accessories that are studded with one of the most common diamond simulants – paste (often referred to as ‘diamanté’).

The most important thing to know is that simulants are A DIFFERENT MATERIAL to the material they are imitating. How do you tell them apart? That, my friend, is ‘gemmology’. Gemmologists learn to identify all gem materials. The work of a gemmologist is that we prove what a gemstone is (or sometimes what it isn’t!) by gaining evidence for its identity through observations and tests.

Often people say that 'simulant' can be confused with the word ‘synthetic’… however, I have faith that you will know the difference after watching this video and this Gem Dictionary explanation:    • 'Synthetic' explained - Gem Dictionary  . We just have to be careful not to confuse these terms during discussions.

I hope you enjoyed this ‘simulant’ explanation and that you tune in again!

The Gem Academy is an online gemmology school that currently specialises in educating the jewellery trade on laboratory-grown diamonds. I cannot think of anything more important right now. Can you? Expensive and hard to identify. We all need help.

I have big dreams for the future – but one step at a time. Thank you for joining me on my journey.
