A Dog’s View on Choice, Safety, and Feeling Heard

In this episode of A Dog’s View, we take a step back and look at the world from the dog’s perspective.

Autonomy is often misunderstood as a lack of structure or control. From a dog’s view, autonomy is much simpler. It is about having choice, predictability, and a sense of safety within clear boundaries.

When dogs lack autonomy, we often see the behaviors humans struggle with most: reactivity, shutdown, anxiety, frustration, and conflict. These behaviors are not failures—they are communication.

In this episode, I explore autonomy as a Total Welfare issue, connecting it to:
• The LEGS Model® (Learning, Environment, Genetics, Self)
• The 5 Domains of animal welfare
• Emotional safety, trust, and coping capacity

We look at how autonomy influences every aspect of a dog’s life—from their environment and health to their emotional state—and why behavior so often reflects unmet needs rather than disobedience.

When dogs feel heard, supported, and given appropriate choice, behavior changes naturally. Trust grows. Regulation improves. Relationships strengthen.

This is what it means to truly see the world through a dog’s view.
