India: Fraud "Digital Arrest" Cases Emerge from Mumbai, Noida, Delhi, Pune; Victims Lose Crores

A rise in "digital arrest" scams is sweeping across India, with victims losing thousands of dollars. In a recent case, a 77-year-old woman from Mumbai was scammed out of $450,000 after fraudsters posing as officials contacted her via WhatsApp and threatened her with a fake money laundering case. The elderly woman was kept in "digital arrest" for over a month. Similar scams have affected people across the country, including in Pune, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad. Criminals use digital tools like Skype to connect with victims, posing as law enforcement. Last month, Ahmedabad police arrested 17 individuals involved in these crimes. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that authorities are collaborating to tackle this growing issue and urged caution from citizens.
