TE Studio's MinnePHit House project out in life as a 1935 fake Tudor in South Minneapolis, MN—climate zone 6. With a 22 by 23 foot footprint, an awkward North addition, a roofline that is difficult to explain, and a 1980s airport noise pollution retrofit the only two things it had going for it were its current owners and their commitment to the location. Even though the latter two do not stay in the house, the originally finished 1,200 square feet (including basement) proved to be too small for the inhabitants. This is what spurred the first discussion about a project. However, the owners weren't just looking for size—they were looking for performance as well. They decided to embark on a journey to North America's first EnerPHit house. This project demonstrates the potential of Passive House retrofitting in a severe heating climate in North America.

This lecture was prepared by Tim Delhey Eian of TE Studio for the Passive House Alliance U.S. Minneapolis/ St. Paul chapter.
